Piece in Tablet Magazine on Overcoming Division
In an article for Tablet Magazine, together with my colleague Abdesalam Soudi, we discuss our role as two University of Pittsburgh professors, one Jewish and one Muslim, who initiated "Pitt Community United in Compassion" to address campus conflicts. These events were designed to cultivate a supportive, understanding environment among faculty, staff, students, and community leaders. It featured personal reflections, discussions on compassion, and its significance in personal and community contexts. Our effort aims to counteract hatred and division by emphasizing common humanity, fostering diverse viewpoints, and promoting civil discourse. This approach is rooted in our personal experiences and cultural backgrounds, highlighting the importance of empathy and diversity in educational and communal settings.
